The Technology and Kids List from February 2019 - read and be concerned!

I am ambivalent - in general - about providing a list because there is such little research available.  When you start to read - you will see why - it is almost impossible to get people to put down their devices - so there is never an opportunity for a 'control' group of any kind. The other issue is that the world of technology changes so quickly that the information can quickly seem out of date.

So - keeping that in mind - 1)  I would start with Adam Alter's book - Irresistible.

You can listen to Adam Alter on The Current on CBC

2)  That book was published before Fortnite existed - so this article from December 2018 Wall Street Journal is important:

3) The 60 minutes piece from December 2018 - speaks to the thinning of the cortex, and the fact that skills kids learn on the ipad are NOT transferable to 'In Real Life', as well has study documented where 18-24months old don't reference parents, rather actively defy when asked to return interactive screen

4) 4) One of the original resources - that highlights many of the researchers who have been at this a long time is Beeba Kidron's movie - In Real Life.  It is hard to find online - but you can borrow it from the Toronto Public Library on DVD and maybe see it on Amazon Prime - if you have access to that.  Definitely worth a look.

5) Sherry Turkle a psychology professor from MIT - who goes back along way - wrote  a book called Alone Together - which actually mentions - years ago now - how fluid identity issues were being sparked by technology.  Her new book Reclaiming Conversation addresses problems technology is bringing to human relationships - in therapy, education, business.

6) Jaron Lanier has a very interesting view of problems with social media - as does Zaidie Smith:

7) With respect to teens - and risks of mental health issues and screens Jean Twenge - a psychologist who has studied adolescence for years is concerned - basically noting that risks are proportional to time spent on screens:

8) Some long term cognitive effects impacting reading:

9) And Finally the Jimmy Kimmel Fortnite Challenge - where you can see how technology is changing the face of childhood:
